DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Disasters can strike suddenly without warning.
It can force you to evacuate or confine you to your home, school or place of
business. Local emergency personnel and relief workers may be on the scene but
they cannot get to everyone right away.
The best way for you and your family to be safe is too
prepare before disaster strikes. Families can cope with an emergency by planning
for such events in advance and working together. Knowing what to do is the best
defense and protection for your family.
Emergency Preparedness Checklist
An
Emergency
Preparedness Checklist consists of pre- planned procedures and items
needed in the event of an emergency or disaster. You can begin by discussing
emergency measures with your family that can be useful such as:
• Learning escape routes from each room in
the house.
• Talk about how to respond to certain
disasters that could occur in your area.
• Discuss what to do if there is a power
outage.
• Teach children when and how to call the
police and fire department.
• Decide what to stock for emergency supplies
in your home.
These types of activities may be helpful in protecting each
other, your home and
pets.
For additional information in creating Emergency Preparedness Checklists contact
your local
American Red Cross Chapter or
Office of Emergency
Management.
Creating a checklist is the beginning of disaster planning.
Once you know what types of disasters are possible in your area,
planning is essential.
